Woman pleads not guilty in possible texting, driving death

Our family is saddened by Carlas choice to plead Not Guilty.  We will all wait for another month for a possible trial date to be scheduled or to see if Carla decides to enter a plea deal. We all know that this accident was just that. An Accident.  I'm sure this woman did not intend to kill my dad or cause extreme injury to my mom but she did make a lot of mistakes that day and she DID ultimately cause the death of my dad by being distracted. She also chose to be uninsured, which left our family with the financial responsibility to cover all of the medical bills. We hope she will take responsibility for her actions and hopefully someday be able to say "I'm Sorry." She needs our prayers just as much or more than our family does.

New Distracted Driving Bill Passed!!

Last week a new bill was passed that would make any dialing or touching your phones screen illegal while driving. You can still talk on your phone and use speaker, siri or any other hands free apps to make a phone call, it is just illegal to look down and type on your phone now. This will help law enforcement officers be able to enforce the already existing texting law. We hope this will help people to see how dangerous and distracting looking down to type on your phone is! HUGE thanks to Senator Urquhart and Rep Don Ipson for their work presenting and passing this bill! And to our city attorney Shawn Guzman. It has been a year in the making and we are so relieved to see it come to pass!

Red Thumb Reminder Fundraiser!!

Red Thumb Reminder's Steve Babcock is brilliant.. he is starting a red nail revolution!! This is his idea:

Anyone can do this. All you need is a thumb, some nail polish and the desire to be safer behind the wheel.  I decided to paint my thumbnail red so every time I picked up my phone from behind the wheel, all I would see was a big red thumb reminding me to put the phone away. As silly as it sounds, it totally worked. And now my hope is that it'll work for everyone else. One red thumbnail at a time.

Jamberry Nails has started a fundraiser and will donate 25% of all sales from their red lacquer nail polish to our Stop the Texts, Stop the Wrecks Campaign!! Go buy some red polish and help make the roads safer for all of us!

IHC Trauma Video of Dave and Leslee's Accident

Dixie Regional Medical Center is trying to raise funds to upgrade their trauma unit at the hospital so people in serious trauma won't have to be lifeflighted to other hospitals and hopefully save lives.  For the past month, they've been filming this video of my parent's accident to show at the Jubilee of Trees. It gives a pretty detailed and graphic account of the morning of March 4th, 2013.

St George Marathon: Team DAVESTRONG!! 2013

We decided (I decided:)) the day before the St. George Marathon, that it would be a good idea to go run it for my dad. It was, after all, his very favorite race and he NEVER missed it. It turned out to be our favorite race EVER!! So worth it. Dave was with us that morning, no doubt. Love you dad!!

Running for Dave: RedRockRelay.. Sept 2013

What a great race! Loved every minute we spent spreading the word to STAY OFF YOUR PHONES WHILE YOU DRIVE!!

Thursday, September 12, 2013

Tomorrow, twelve family members, friends and neighbors of Dave Henson will run the Red Rock Relay in his honor. Team DAVESTRONG. We will run to raise awareness of the dangers of Distracted Driving. The Relay will start in Brian Head and end in Zions. We are excited to be able to do this for Dave. Running was a love he shared with all of us and now it has become a way for us to start to heal and feel close to him. PLEASE continue to be smart while you drive. Park your phones. Put them away. Don't text and drive! You can always contribute to the campaign to help with billboards, materials for education in the local schools, signs, banners and public service announcements.  Donations are accepted through paypal at or by clicking the "donate" button on the right hand side of this blog. Love you all!
